In the 1960s, Aveline and Michio Kushi opened a small natural foods market in Boston, inspired by their belief that what we eat shapes who we are. Named Erewhon after one of their favorite books, it became the first natural foods store in the country.

Soon, Erewhon moved to Los Angeles, sourcing organic products that were nearly impossible to find. The vision was simple yet ambitious: by filling our bodies with the best the earth has to offer, we can become our best selves.

Over fifty years later, that idea still stands.

Giving back isn’t just a responsibility at Erewhon—it’s part of our purpose. As a certified organic retailer and B-Corp, our mission extends beyond sourcing pure, organic products. We’re committed to fighting food insecurity, reducing waste, and uplifting communities in Los Angeles, the city we call home.

Through donations of over 25 tons of food each year, large-scale composting, and our glass reuse program that recycles millions of bottles and jars, we strive to minimize our impact and maximize our contribution. We also partner with nonprofits, host community cleanups, and support local farms and brands to strengthen Southern California’s economy and environment.

More than fifty years later, our vision is the same: nourish people, care for the planet, and give back to the community that inspires us.
